In Chhattisgarh, Congress gets cracking on farm promises

RAIPUR: Even before Congress has formed its government in the state, a letter issued by Chhattisgarh co-operative department is doing the rounds on social media asking statelevel bankers’ committee, State Bank of India and regional banks to furnish details on loan dues on farmers by November 30.
The letter states that since the Congress has promised in its party manifesto to waive farmers’ loan within 10 days of coming in power, preparations for fulfilment of the promise needs to be done. Hence, details have been sought from all banks and their branches about the loans pending in names of farmers, details of which should be submitted by November 30.

Senior officials confirmed about the authenticity of the letter stating that it is the first step towards fulfilling Congress promise, for which data must be gathered. “Although a final decision would be taken by the competent authorities in the new government, we are preparing the data that will be presented to the government,” a senior official said.

When contacted, state chief secretary Ajay Singh said, “I have sought data on financial implications on various issues, including the loan waiver. This letter has been issued for the purpose”.

Soon after party’s victory in assembly elections, AICC general secretary PL Punia had told media persons that the Congress would stand by its promise and fulfillment and loan waiver of farmers would be the top priority.
It is expected that the amount of total loan to be waived may cross over Rs 5000 crore. Bank officials said that there are collecting information about pending loans on farmers.
