Biodiversity is a national treasure, said PM

Madhya Pradesh has added another milestone to its wildlife conservation efforts by declaring Madhav National Park in Shivpuri as its ninth tiger reserve. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announcing its establishment, said India’s biodiversity is a national treasure, and the government remains committed to its protection.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released a tigress into the reserve to mark the occasion, calling it a step towards balancing conservation and accessibility. He said the new reserve is not a zoo but a natural habitat where wildlife can thrive, ensuring harmonious coexistence with humans. This move strengthens Madhya Pradesh’s reputation as India’s leading state for tiger conservation.

With nine tiger reserves, including Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna, and Satpura, Madhya Pradesh now has the highest number in the country. The state also leads in forest cover, spanning 85,724 square kilometres, according to the ‘India State of Forest Report 2023.’ It was the first to implement the Wildlife Protection Act in 1973, and its conservation efforts have gained global recognition, with Satpura Tiger Reserve included in UNESCO’s tentative heritage list.

To reduce human-wildlife conflict, the state government is developing wildlife corridors and strengthening rescue squads. Compensation for conflict-related incidents has been increased from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. Officials believe these initiatives will boost conservation while also benefiting local communities.

Madhav Tiger Reserve, originally declared a national park in 1958, spans 375 square kilometres. Its landscape includes lakes, wetlands, and forests, providing a habitat for tigers, leopards, and crocodiles. The reserve is expected to promote eco-tourism, generate jobs, and enhance conservation efforts, further reinforcing Madhya Pradesh’s status as India’s wildlife conservation leader.
