Madhya Pradesh selected for SKOCH Financial Inclusion and Deepening Award

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has been selected for SKOCH Financial Inclusion and Deepening Award-2014. State has been selected in Best State category. Madhya Pradesh will be conferred SKOCH Order of Merit certificate next month in New Delhi. Madhya Pradesh has written a new chapter of progress through inclusive growth in rural areas. Special attention has been paid to availability of banking services in remote rural areas. Rural areas’ progress and villagers’ economic upliftment can be ensured only through financial inclusion. With this in view, ultra small banks are being opened in the radius of every 5 kilometers in rural areas. So far, 2200 ultra small banks have been opened in the state with transactions worth over Rs. 1500 crore.

Additional Chief Secretary Panchayats and Rural Development Smt. Aruna Sharma informed that 14 thousand 979 such villages were identified for financial inclusion where people had to travel 20 to 90 kms for banking services. With opening of ultra small banks, funds meant for beneficiaries and MNREGA labourers are being deposited in their accounts directly in their villages.

Recently, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released a report on this unique model praising this model as the best innovation in direction of good governance. Impressed by Madhya Pradesh’s innovation, several other stats have also expressed desire to replicate it. So far, delegations of a number of states have visited Madhya Pradesh to study this model.
