Malnutrition is getting high in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: In a study conducted in Madhy Pradesh revealed Bhopal has the maximum number of children in the age group of 0-5 years with wasting mass muscle problem.

Study conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition in four major cities said, Bhopal having 24.6 per cent malnourished infants (0-5), followed by Jabalpur (24.2%), Indore (21.7%) and Gwalior (21.1%) malnourished children.

Children’s health in the state capital is poor can also be gauged from the fact that it ranks 15th with 55.8 per cent among 50-odd districts of the state in the underweight category. Indore is the most nourished city with 34.9 per cent infants in the underweight category.

According to the report, 52 per cent children below five years of age in the state are malnourished. More than half of the children in 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Indore, are underweight. The nutritional status of these children is poor as almost 49 per cent of them are facing stunting problem and over 25 per cent are wasting their muscle mass.

During the period of March-August 2010 the study has been conducted. It was conducted in about 19,756 households in different districts of the state. The study was aimed at finding out the prevalence of malnutrition among under-five rural children, besides ascertaining the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices for developing district-specific nutrition intervention strategies.

According to the study, the lowest underweight rate is in Vidhisha district (34.1%), while Satna has the highest rate with 67.1 per cent.
