Mongrel Menace claims another life in Ujjain
7-year-old girl dies after being chased by a stray
Ujjain
Weeks after a 17-year-old lost his life to rabies, a seven year old girl died on Friday afternoon when her heart rate shot up as she ran home to avoid a stray canine chasing her.
The unfortunate incident took place at the Bohra Bakhal in the city. Family members later protested by bringing traffic in the area to a standstill. CCTV footage of the incident has been found.
The deceased has been identified as Insiya, daughter of Mustufa Lohawala—a trader in the Freeganj area of the city.
Residents said there were already over 150 cases of dogbite in the past month. 17 year old Sonu Sharma died of rabies after symptoms became apparent some 20 days after he suffered a canine attack in the Nagjhiri area.
Family members say the girl started vomiting as she ran home after being chased by the dog, and soon fainted as her heart rate shot up dangerously.
Parents took the girl to two private hospitals nearby, and doctors at both places confirmed her demise.
The incident raises serious questions over civic services in the city as municipal authorities have repeatedly failed to control the mongrel menace despite a huge rise in dogbite cases since the onset of rains this year.
Though civic bodies across the state maintain that they catch strays and neuter them before releasing them, there is no credible system to check the veracity of their claims.
