Patients will be able to undergo continuous kidney replacement therapy in AIIMS Bhopal
Patients will now be able to undergo Continuous Kidney Replacement Therapy (CKRT) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal. This new facility has been started in the Nephrology Department of AIIMS. CKRT is helpful for kidney patients for whom dialysis is not possible.
Recently, an elderly patient had arrived at AIIMS in such a condition that it was not possible to undergo dialysis. Then the doctors of Nephrology department resorted to CKRT. This is an advanced stage of dialysis. It is used on those patients whose condition has become serious after kidney failure.
Dr. MK Atlani, Associate Professor, Nephrology Department, AIIMS Bhopal, said that CKRT provides support to the kidneys of such patients whose blood pressure is low and it is not possible to do dialysis normally.
Associate Professor of Nephrology Department, AIIMS Bhopal said that many patients with multi organ failure (stopping of functioning of two or more organs of the body) and acute renal failure (short-term kidney failure) are not able to undergo dialysis. The reason for this is that the immunity level of the patient concerned is weak and he is not medically fit for dialysis. In these patients, the increased level of creatinine is controlled and treated with kidney replacement therapy.
The chemical creatine provides energy to the muscles and produces creatinine as waste. It gets filtered through the kidneys and comes out through urine. When the kidneys do not function properly, the amount of creatinine in the body starts increasing. If this happens, physical problems like diabetes and high blood pressure can occur.
60% of patients admitted to ICU have acute kidney injury (acute kidney failure). Of these, 15% require dialysis. Patients in this category will benefit from treatment with continuous kidney replacement therapy. Dr. Atlani said that all the multi-organ failure patients admitted to ICU for treatment of different diseases and those who also suffer from kidney failure can be treated with kidney replacement therapy. Currently, doctors recommend dialysis if creatinine level increases in the blood of a multi organ failure patient. But, due to the patient not being medically fit for dialysis, the patient cannot undergo dialysis. Due to this, infection keeps increasing in the blood.
