Red Alert: Naxals Kill Bastar MP Baliram Kashyap’s Son
Perhaps, retaliating to the heightened government rhetoric and action, suspected Naxals on Saturday sprayed bullets at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baliram Kashyap’s sons, leaving one of them dead.
Baliram Kashyap represents the rebel-infested Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.
Confirming the incident a top police official said: “Naxals fired several rounds at Kashyap’s sons – Dinesh and Tansen – when they were attending a Mahashthami Durga Puja celebration in Bastar district.”
The two were later moved to the Maharani Hospital at Jagdalpur, where Tansen succumbed to the wounds, he added.
Kashyap’s sons were at their ancestral village to attend festivities when four cycle-borne attackers opened fire from close range before fleeing the scene.
The incident took place soon after the deceased’s brother Kedar, who serves as a cabinet minister in the Raman Singh government, left with his security guards at the conclusion of the puja ceremony.
The 33-year- old Tansen was president of Bastar Janpad Panchayat.
The condition of Dinesh, the eldest of the Kashyap siblings – a former MLA and president of the Jagdalpur cooperative bank, is reported to be stable.
The daring daylight shooting came less than 24 hours after Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, on a visit to the Chhattisgarh capital of Raipur, described the state along with Jharkhand as the ‘epicenter’ of Maoist extremism.
Speaking to correspondents after reviewing the security situation in the state Chidambaram had promised all support to the state government in what he described as a “long-drawn fight against Naxals.”
Also on Friday, state police and the paramilitary CRPF were reported to have gunned down some 12 Naxal in a fierce gun-battle that lasted nearly four hours in the Bijapur district of the state.
A joint anti-rebel operation, comprising of the state police and the CRPF, is underway in the forests in the district.
