City Mayor Malti Rai paid a surprise visit to the public utility center at Bittan Market on Saturday. Dissatisfied with the amenities, she levied a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the company responsible for its upkeep.
She cautioned the organization, Sulabh International, to ensure that repairs and improvements are made within a three-day period.
The Mayor also visited street vendors at the market and initiated action against the use of proscribed single-use plastics. She encouraged the vendors to upgrade their packaging to safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Following her instructions, the municipal health department confiscated nearly 100 kg of banned plastic from the vendors and imposed spot fines amounting to Rs. 11,900. NSS volunteers distributed cloth bags to vendors.
