TEACHING AT SANCHI UNIVERSITY OF BUDDHIST-INDIC STUDIES FROM OCTOBER

Bhopal: Teaching would begin from October this year at the world’s first university exclusively dedicated to philosophy, especially Buddhist and Indian philosophy established in Bhopal. Initially, 8 certificate courses would be offered including Prakrit and Jaina Studies, Learning Sanskrit Language, Buddhism, Yoga Tradition in India, Comparative Religion, Indian Philosophy, Kashmiri Shaivism Theory and Practice and Hindu and Buddhist Tantra.

The professors going to teach these residential courses are academics of international repute and none of them is below the level of Vice Chancellor. These professors include those from America, Germany and Tibet. Each of these two-month courses will have 25 to 30 students.
At present the university has 5 schools and 3 more schools would be added soon. Noted scholar Sushri Shashipriya Kumar, former Dean of Sanskrit Department of JNU, has been appointed Vice Chancellor of the university. Shri Sendong Rinpoche is the Chancellor of the university. He belongs to Tibet and was the first Prime Minister of Tibet government- in- exile. The Mentor Group of the university comprises renowned scholars from all over the world.

The 5 schools started initially include School of Buddhist Philosophy, School of Sanatan Dharma and Indic Studies, School of International Buddhist Studies, School of Comparative Religion, School of Languages, Literature and Arts. Soon, the School of Language, Literature and Arts would be bifurcated and 3 new schools added. These include Study of Civilizations, School of Western Philosophy and School of Futurology.

Teaching of three foreign languages including Chinese, Tibetan and Sinhaliese (Sri Lanka) would be started from next session. Shortly, a Centre of Alternative Education would be set up in the university. So far, 62 countries have hit the university’s website. Maximum hits were from America.

It may be mentioned here that Madhya Pradesh government has allotted 100 acre land and sanctioned 353 posts for this university building that is coming up at village Dhakana-Chikana near Salamatputr adjoining Bhopal. Foundation of the university costing about Rs. 400 crore was laid by Sri Lankan President Shri Mahinda Rajpakshe and Bhutanese Prime Minister Shri Jigme Y. Thinle on September 20, 2012.
