Three day state mourning has been declared in MP
BHOPAL: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh passed away from heart attack on Friday at 6:15 pm in New Delhi’s AIIMS. He would be cremated on Sunday at his native village Churhat in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh.
Arjun Singh had begun his political career as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Madhya Pradesh and served the state in many capacities. He rose to become Chief Minister of the state first from 1980-85 and later again in 1988-89.
Chief Minister of MP declared a three-day state mourning in Madhya Pradesh on the death of the Congress leader, who was once close to the Gandhi family and the party’s supremo Sonia Gandhi.
On Saturday the Congress Working Committee (CWC) held a condolence meeting who made him a permanent invitee in the apex party decision making body.
Mourning his death, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said “the country has lost a veteran leader who left a strong imprint on our political life.”
He said, “Arjun Singh will be remembered for his deep concern for the welfare of the disadvantaged sections and for promoting the cause of equality and social justice in the country. He was an able administrator, experienced legislator and a leader who had strong ties to the people.”
Arjun Singh had of later been back in controversy for reassessment of his role during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy when he as chief minister allegedly ensured a safe passage to Warren Anderson, the CEO of Union Carbide, responsible for the toxic gas leak from its plant killing over 15,000 people.
Arjun Singh was a sitting Member of the Rajya Sabha at the time of his passing away. He was the Union Minister of Human Resource Development at the centre for eight years and his name was even raised for the post of Prime Minister in 2004.
