Women power against liquor sale-consumption in MP

An appreciable initiative done by a group of tribal women of Madhya Pradesh’s Talanpur village, who had declared a “ban” on the sale and consumption of liquor, while warning of imposing a hefty penalty on those defying the “prohibition.”

Under the banner of Mahila Samiti women fed up with husbands “who get drunk and beat up their wives, apart from wasting hard-earned money,” the women in the village, about 180 km from here, have come together to oppose the liquor selling and purchasing.

The Mahila Samiti is led by 30-year-old labourer Puni Bai. The Samiti has declared that no liquor would be sold or consumed in the village from Sunday.

Puni Bai said, “If any person is found selling liquor in the village, he/she will be fined Rs. 2,100. Likewise, anyone found drunk will have to shell out Rs. 1,100 as fine.”

Interestingly she added that “informer” would get a reward of Rs.151.

A by-election is to be held on February 14, following the death of Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Jamuna Devi. Talanpur, with a population of around 3000, is a part of the Kukshi Assembly constituency in Dhar district.

The women have warned political parties “not to use liquor to entice voters on polling day.” Making headlines the Samiti women dismantled an illegal liquor producing unit in the village.
