India-Australia 5th Test: Virat Kohli’s men win by 31 runs, India register sixth win on Australian soil

Virat Kohli-led India continued to dominate in the ongoing Test series against Australia as they won the first Test of the four-match series by 31 runs in Adelaide. Chasing a 323-run target in the 2nd innings, Australia resumed play at 104 for four on Day 5 but were bowled out for just 291. It is for the first time in the history of Indian cricket that the team has won the opening Test of a series Down Under. The win in Adelaide was India’s sixth Test win on Australian soil. India also ended their 10-year wait of winning a Test in Australia having last won a Test in Australia back in 2008 at the WACA in Perth under the captaincy of Anil Kumble.

Ishant Sharma picked the first wicket of the day when he dismissed Travis Head with a brilliant bouncer in the 57th over of Australia’s chase in the 2nd innings. But the batsmen to follow showed some resilience. After Head’s wicket, Marsh added 41 runs for the sixth wicket with Tim Paine. The partnership was looking good before Marsh nicked one behind the wickets off Bumrah’s bowling. Pat Cummins joined Paine at the crease and the pair added 31 runs for the seventh wicket. Bumrah then struck again as Paine edged one into Pant’s gloves. The tail-enders continued to frustrate India as Cummins and Mitchell Starc stitched a valuable 41-run stand for the eighth wicket. Cummins and Starc were dismissed after contributing 28 runs each.

A 323-run target was almost impossible for the hosts having managed to chase down a 200-plus total only once in their Adelaide history – in 1902. The win has made India the first team from Asia to win a Test match in South Africa, England and Australia in a single calendar year.
