Watch: Prithvi Shaw smashes 16 runs in 3 balls to Mohammed Siraj, gets a hug from Rohit Sharma

Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer were the stars on the day as Mumbai booked themselves a spot in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2018. Shaw, who recently proved his batting masterclass in the Test series against Windies, was in full swing in the semi-final against Hyderabad. The 18-year-old hit some spectacular shots en route to his half-century, especially against fellow Indian international Mohammed Siraj. The sort of strokes Shaw produced against Siraj left India’s limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma so impressed that he went on to hug the youngster on seeing him scoring 16 runs off just three balls.

Shaw and Iyer bagged a half-century each as Mumbai eased by Hyderabad in a rain-hit encounter while chasing a total of 247. Shaw was the top-scorer for the team with a score of 61 while Iyer remained not out at 55 alongside Ajinkya Rahane at 17. Rohit was the second batsman to be dismissed, as he was bowled by Mehdi Hasan on a score of 17 runs.

Although plenty has been spoken about Shaw’s ability to hit the ball and score runs at pace, the 8th over the Mumbai innings proved what he really is capable of. After being sledged by Siraj for failing to hit a bouncer over the wicket-keeper’s head, Shaw hit some glorious shots in the over.

He hit the fourth ball of the over behind the stumps for a six. Siraj bowled another bouncer and got hit for a second consecutive maximum over the fine leg boundary. The next delivery, a half-volley, and Shaw hit it for a boundary on the leg side, hence scoring 16 runs from the final three balls of the bowler.

While the Indian squad for first 2 ODIs against West Indies has been named and there’s no mention of Prithvi Shaw in it, the youngster is expected to make his One-Day international debut in the last three matches where an all-Mumbai opening pairing of Shaw and Rohit could be seen in the Indian national team.

Now that Mumbai have booked themselves a spot in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the second semi-final takes place between Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi and Jharkhand. The winner of the second semi-final will face Mumbai in the title decider.
