36 minor irrigation schemes worth Rs 5690 crores approved in Madhya Pradesh in a year

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has fulfilled its resolve to make agriculture flourish by approving 36 minor irrigation schemes (one major irrigation scheme) worth Rs 5690 crore in a year in the state. On completion of these projects, irrigation facility will be available in more than 2 lakh hectare area. During this period, 74 minor schemes have also been completed, which have increased irrigation facility in 26 thousand 277 hectares. Apart from this, irrigation facility has been created in about 60 thousand hectare area from large and medium projects under construction. During this period, C.B.I.B. New Delhi has awarded the Mohanpura multipurpose project with the “Best Construction Entity” for completing the project on time and for utilizing construction material favourable to the environment.
The state government has decided that irrigation capacity will be enhanced by 12 lakh hectare in the next five years. This way the current irrigation capacity will be enhanced from 33 lakh hectare to 45 lakh hectare. Also, for the next five years, the rates of irrigation water will be maintained. The state government has also decided to increase the period of election of water consumer organizations from 2 years to 5 years.
The state government has formulated a new policy to achieve full water-logging capacity of the state’s reservoirs. The silt and sand of the reservoir will be separated and silt will be given to the farmers. Revenue will be obtained by selling sand. Promotion of foreign investment in irrigation projects for the development of agriculture is also being considered.
Irrigation management work is being done in 24 lakh 74 thousand hectare area through 2064 Water Consumer Sansthas as on March 2019 with the participation of farmers in the state. In the new schemes, provision has been, made for lining of canals which will help in preventing loss of water. In the last one year, 116.34 km in Tawa project and 113.51 km lining work in Barna Macro project has been undertaken. Currently, the process of preparing DPR of 114 small irrigation schemes is in progress.
On the basis of availability of additional water in dams and the demand of water in the state, 112 ponds of Ganga Basin Rewa are being filled with water from Bansagar dam. Similarly, 14 ponds of Yamuna Basin Gwalior are being filled with water from different canals. In Tikamgarh district ten ponds of the region are being filled by Harpura canal. All ponds of Chandel era and other ancient ponds under Water Resources Department are being maintained regularly. Proposals for the restoration and fortification of about 30 ancient ponds of Chhatarpur and Tikamgarh district are being prepared.
The state government has given priority to complete the irrigation schemes lying incomplete. Target has been set to complete 100 small irrigation schemes every year. Four macro and 8 medium projects are to be completed soon. With these efforts, the day is not far when the entire Madhya Pradesh will be self-reliant in irrigation.
