Patna: On the occasion of his 69th birthday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said the Janata Dal-United will contest the upcoming 2020 state Assembly elections in with the National Democratic Alliance. He also claimed that the alliance will win 200 in the 243-seat Assembly.
The JDU first passed a resolution in August 2017 to join the NDA led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“As far as NPR (National Population Register) is concerned, it will be on the basis of the 2010 format and we have also passed the resolution in the State Legislative Assembly,” said Nitish Kumar said while addressing his party workers at the Karyakarta Sammelan in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan.
His statement comes less than a week after the Bihar Assembly passed a unanimous resolution saying that there is no need for a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. The same resolution, however, added that the NPR exercise will be conducted as per the 2010 format.
An electronic database of usual residents, NPR was first created in 2010 as a record of people who have stayed in a particular area for the past six months or more. It is individual and identity-specific, unlike the Census.
On January 29 of this year, Bihar CM and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar’s party decided to expel national vice-president Prashant Kishor and national general secretary Pawan Varma after the two openly opposed the idea of a nationwide NRC. At the time, party insiders had revealed that Nitish Kumar had warned Prashant Kishor and Pawan Varma to behave or leave the party. This public spat came at a time when the JDU’s political opponents such as former allies the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have been planning statewide campaigns to address issues such as unemployment. The people of Bihar will decide who stakes claim to form a government in the state sometime around October of this year.
