In docu-drama ‘The Test’, Tim Paine spills beans on outburst with Virat Kohli

Indian skipper Virat Kohli was often targeted for his aggressive behaviour on the field during his early days. To date, he remains one of the most aggressive and emotional characters on the field if riled up by an opponent. Kohli was at his aggressive best, sledging Australia skipper Tim Paine, during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19 edition as well.

With wickets tumbling left, right and center, Team India sensed an upper hand over Australia despite giving them a slender 43-run first-innings lead. Thus, when Paine came into the middle, he had a job in hand to extend the lead and give the visitors a tough total to chase (Australia eventually won the Perth Test by 146 runs).

Things heated up between Kohli and Paine with the two captains exchanging few words and the umpire had to barge in. Nonetheless, what exactly transpired Paine to take such a step against Kohli, who usually cherishes such battles, remained unknown.

‘No, I’m the captain, it’s my turn, I have to stand up and show him we’re here for the fight’
In the recently-released docu-drama ‘The Test’, on an OTT platform, Paine spilled the beans on the incident. He stated, “The plan was not to talk to him when he was batting when we were batting it’s kind of up to the individual what they want to do. I sort of just had enough and thought you also have to stand up for yourself and your teammates and that was one of the reasons I thought, ‘no, I’m the captain, it’s my turn, I have to stand up and show him we’re here for the fight’.

On the other hand, even Australia head coach and former opener Justin Langer revealed on the episode, “I remember that afternoon (feeling) like a punching bag. We can’t fight back because it felt like we had our hands behind our backs and we just had to take it. It just felt a bit double standards to me. Imagine if we behaved two out of ten (of) that.”

Back then, Australia were staying away from on-field verbal duals as they were on their road to winning back the hearts of their fans post the ball-tampering scandal, that shocked them to the core during the South Africa tour earlier in 2018.

Eventually, Kohli-led India defeated Paine & Co., 2-1, to claim their first-ever Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The next edition is set to commence later in the year, with another few enthralling on-field battles in expected.
