Bengaluru murder case, accused wrote in diary: Mahalakshmi used to beat him for refusing to marry her, I was fed up of her torture
The suicide note of Mukti Ranjan Rai, the accused of chopping 29-year-old Mahalakshmi’s body into 59 pieces in Bengaluru, has surfaced. A diary was found near her body. In it, he wrote, ‘She had beaten me several times when I refused to marry her. I was fed up of her torture. So I killed her.’
The accused’s family alleged that apart from beating him, Mahalakshmi also extorted money and valuables from Mukti Ranjan. The woman forced him to give her a gold ring, an expensive mobile phone and a necklace. Mahalakshmi had once even got Mukti Ranjan arrested by the police.
Mahalakshmi’s body was found on September 20 in a one-bedroom apartment in a three-storey building near Basappa Garden in Vyalikaval area of Bengaluru. 59 pieces of her body were kept in the fridge. Mahalakshmi lived there alone.
Mahalakshmi and Mukti Ranjan were in a relationship. Both worked in a mall. Mukti Ranjan committed suicide on September 25 near his village in Bhadrak district of Odisha. His body was found hanging from a tree. His bike and a diary were found nearby.
The accused’s brother said – The murder was committed on 3rd September, he told me after coming home. The accused’s younger brother Satya told the police that Mukti Ranjan had murdered Mahalakshmi on 3rd September itself. Both were in a relationship. Mahalakshmi insisted on marriage, due to which there was a rift between the two.
According to Satya, on September 3, there was a quarrel between the two on this issue. After this, Mukti Ranjan strangled Mahalakshmi to death. At night, he chopped her body into pieces with an axe and hid it in the refrigerator. After this, he came home from Bengaluru.
Satya said, ‘My brother was with me for the last nine-ten days. After staying with me for three days, he confessed to killing Mahalakshmi. He was planning to throw away the pieces of Mahalakshmi’s body after two-three months.’
Mahalakshmi’s brother had threatened Mukti Ranjan. Satya alleges that once Mukti Ranjan was going to Kerala. Then Mahalakshmi stopped his bike and got him beaten up by accusing him of kidnapping. The people present there beat him up badly and handed him over to the police. Mukti Ranjan was released after paying 1 thousand rupees to the police.
Mahalakshmi’s brother Ukkam Singh and his friends also threatened Muktiranjan. They beat him up. They told him to do as Mahalakshmi says. If he doesn’t do it, they will kill him and his brothers. Based on the statement of Muktiranjan’s brother, the police is now questioning Ukkam.
The murder was revealed when a foul smell came from the house. On 20th September, Mahalakshmi’s murder was revealed when Jeevan Prakash, who lived in her building, felt a strong stench. The stench was coming from the top floor of the house where Mahalakshmi lived. When Jeevan reached Mahalakshmi’s door, the stench became so strong that it became difficult to stand.
The door was locked from outside. Jeevan immediately called Mahalakshmi’s brother Ukkam Singh and sister. Mahalakshmi’s family arrived at around 12.30 in the night. After this the lock of the door was broken.
There was blood scattered in the room and insects were crawling on the floor. All the household items were scattered. When Mahalakshmi’s mother opened the refrigerator, she found her daughter’s severed head, legs and more than 59 pieces of dead body inside.
The police had told Mahalakshmi’s family that CCTV footage showed two people coming to Mahalakshmi’s house on a scooter on the night of the murder. The police had questioned a hair dyer named Ashraf in this case.
Mahalakshmi was living alone with her husband for 4 years. Mahalakshmi’s brother Ukkam Singh told Dainik Bhaskar that his family is from Tikapur village of Nepal’s Kanth province. 30 years ago, his parents came to Bangalore for work and settled here.
Mahalakshmi was married to Hemant Das, who lives in Nelamangala. Hemant works in a mobile accessories shop. Mahalakshmi used to work in a mall. They also have a 4-year-old daughter. Mahalakshmi and Hemant were living separately for about 4 years. However, both of them were not divorced yet. The daughter lived with Hemant.
Ukkam said that Mahalakshmi was living in a rented house in Vyalikaval since October 2023. She was an independent woman. She had bought all the items present in the house with her own money. She had brought all the household items including sofa, cupboard herself. The fridge in which her dead body was found was also bought by her just a few days ago.
