Shettar to sworn in as Karnataka’s chief minister today
Bangalore. Jagadish Shivappa Shettar, a loyalist of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, will be sworn in as Karnataka’s chief minister on Thursday. The BJP legislature party in the state on Tuesday unanimously chose Shettar as their new leader in the presence of party’s central observers Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh.
The change of guard in Karnataka may seem amicable enough, but the smiles are forced, for there is trouble ahead in the state for the party. For one, outgoing chief minister Sadananda Gowda has emerged as an alternate force within the BJP. Gowda’s loyalists had their own terms to dictate before he agreed to resign as Chief Minister
The selection of Shettar, however, was not easy, as the faction led by outgoing chief minister Sadanand Gowda, bargained hard for their demands.
Shettar will meet Karnataka governor, HR Bhadwaj in Bangalore to stake his claim to form the next government in the state.
Earlier, Gowda resigned as state chief minister after a less than comfortable tenure of eleven months, making way for Shettar.
With 46 MLAs and 8 MLCs backing him, Gowda’s group forced the meeting to be put off by over five hours and though Jagadish Shettar was elected unanimously, he’ll take oath only on Thursday once the rest of the Cabinet has been decided, giving him little choice.
“Politics is all about pressure, from MLAs, ministers, leaders,” Shettar said.
Ten months to go before the next Assembly election, it’ll be a tightrope walk for Jagadish Shettar. In the current political scenario, he’ll be pulled from all sides – the Yeddyurappa faction, the Sadananda Gowda faction, the Anantkumar faction, all of whom he has to mollify.
The selection of Shettar as Karnataka’s next chief minister can be viewed as a major victory for state BJP strongman Yeddyurappa, who has not been allowed to reclaim the chief minister’s chair, as he continues to battle illegal mining charges leveled against him by the Karnataka Lokayukta.
