Madhya Pradesh will get record kharif crop this year

Bhopal: Kharif sowing during 2012 in the state has created a record. As per assessment of Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development Department, farmers have sown corps this year in 116 lakh 25 thousand hectares, which is one lakh 55 thousand hectares more than the estimated target. Last year, Kharif crops were sown in 114 lakh 70 thousand hectares. More crops have been sown in the state this year due to timely availability of seeds, fertiliser, pesticide and other inputs to farmer.

Madhya Pradesh is pioneer in the country in soyabean production. Due to ever increasing price of soyabean, a new record of soyabean sowing has been created. Last year, soyabean was sown in 57 lakh 30 thousand hectare area, which has increased to 58 lakh 12 thousand hectares. Similarly, paddy crops have been sown in 16 lakh 65 thousand hectare area.

This year, jowar was sown in three lakh 51 thousand hectares against the target of four lakh 20 thousand hectares. Maize crops have been sown in nine lakh four thousand hectares, which is more that the target of eight lakh 44 thousand. Thus, total sowing of coarse cereals stood at 32 lakh 92 thousand hectares against the target of 33 lakh 31 thousand hectares.

Among pulses, tuar has been sown in five lakh 46 thousand hectares, urad six lakh 59 thousand hectares and moong has been sown in one lakh 16 thousand hectares, which is more than target as well as crops sown last year. Groundnut sown area is estimated to be two lakh 25 thousand hectares, linseed 78 thousand and Ramtil is estimated to be sown in 78 thousand hectares. Besides these corps, only cotton sowing area was 50 percent less that estimates. It was to be sown in six lakh 57 thousand hectares, but sowing operations were disturbed due to delay in arrival of monsoon.
