Farmers’ protest in Mandsaur: Collector roughed up, bank and vehicles set ablaze in Madhya Pradesh
Mandsaur: A day after six persons were killed in police firing, agitating farmers on Wednesday roughed up Mandsaur district collector Swatantra Kumar Singh and tore his shirt when he tried to talk to them in the afternoon. According to media reports, the protesters set ablaze a branch of UCO Bank and a few vehicles in the district. They also pelted stones at a police outpost.
Meanwhile, Congress party sources at New Delhi said that Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit the area on Thursday. Inspector general of police in Ujjain V Madhukumar told a media house, “In response to the message that Congress vice president wants to land at Neemuch, we have communicated that the airstrip is not operational.” It was also learnt that Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav may also visit the area with Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier, the state government led by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced Rs 1 crore to each of the deceased farmer’s families and a government job to one of the member of these families. It also announced Rs 5 lakh to those injured in the clash.
Chouhan also called the killing of farmers in Mandsaur a “conspiracy fuelled by Congress,” and said that his government was “sensitive” to the needs of the farmers and stands with them.
It was also learnt that internet services have been suspended in neighbouring districts of Ratlam, Neemuch and Ujjain until further notice.
Also, funerals of the six deceased farmers haven’t been held yet as agitating farmers are demanding the chief minister to visit the spot.
