Fake Encounter: Protesters Seek Manipur CM’s Scalp
Normal life remained paralysed in Imphal on Tuesday, the second day of a 48 hour strike called by a social organization in protest of the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter on July 23.
The government decision for a magisterial enquiry into the incident failed to pacify agitators, who continue to press for the resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and strictest of action against the guilty police officials.
Shops, education institutions, offices and other business establishments remained closed across the northeastern state of Manipur for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, as the agitation spilled over to parts adjoining state capital Imphal.
Media reports suggest that the police resorted to tear gas and blank firing at several places as agitators rallied and torched effigies of the chief minister.
Chungkham Sanjit, a former militant of the banned Peoples Liberation Army and a pregnant woman were killed on July 23 in a shootout on BT Road in the heart of Imphal.
Police claimed to have killed the militant in a genuine encounter and contended that the woman was killed by the militant.
Pictures later published by a Delhi based magazine showed that Sanjit was dragged into a pharmacy and killed in cold blood.
