Karnataka votes for local branch of Modi Sarkar
BJP’s convincing victory in Karnataka does two things immediately for the party: one, it provides an impetus that was needed after the genuinely worrying losses in by-elections in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and more symbolically in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s home turf; two, tank up the party’s most reliable vehicle that is both its medium and message: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s credentials to deliver electoral as well as governmental success.
It won’t be wrong to assume that along with anti-incumbency, the voters of Karnataka, like those of 21 out of India’s 29 states prior to these polls, were swayed convincingly by the prospects of state synching with Centre. So, in a way, the contest was, as predicted, one between the prime minister of India and a potential chief minister of Karnataka. The PM won.
This does not mean that the belief of Modi being able to deliver better, louder automatically fell into place prior to voters going to the hustings. The groundwork that BJP has become known for became most apparent in the success of B Sriramulu, the party’s tribal candidate for deputy chief minister, in breaking Congress-Siddaramaiah’s hold over SC-STs. Unlike the Congress leader’s effort to wean away the Lingayat vote from BJP by using the lazier — and, as it turned out, unattractive — offer to give the community a special status, the opposition was more successful in hitching the SC-ST wagon to the Modi-central government workhorse.
The BJP also dug its heels in to dispel any real or perceived infighting, thereby giving the voter a clear picture of whom he was voting for (read: the local branch of Modi sarkar). A similar reading of Congress was never reassuring, even for people who may have not found any serious fault in Siddaramaiah’s five-year tenure.
Karanataka going the BJP way is a major achievement, both in terms of ‘breaking into the south’, as well as firming up the 2019 Lok Sabha narrative. The counterfactual of what the results may have been if Congress had teamed up with Janata Dal (Secular) is inconsequential. What is consequential, however, is that for the national voter, as is the case for voters in most states barring a handful, there is no viable alternative to BJP rule. Expectations may have been lowered, at least in theory. But not enough to make much electoral difference.
