11 die in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh in flash floods at popular picnic spot

Bhopal: Eleven youth died on Wednesday in Sultan Garh Waterfalls in Gwalior’s Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh after water level increased due to sudden release from a dam. At least 40 people are still reportedly stranded on the spot.
Rescue operations are underway at the popular picnic spot situated amidst rocks in Shivpuri. A flash flood led to the sudden rise of the water level. Rajesh Hingankar, the superintendent of police, said that a helicopter rescue operation has been initiated at the spot.
The helicopter has been sourced from the Indian Army. The State Disaster Relief Force is, however, finding the rescue work tough now due to poor visibility.
Seven people have been rescued till now. The Indian Air Force and the Army will launch their rescue operations on Thursday at first light in the morning.
“Efforts underway to rescue those stranded. I’m in touch with rescue teams,” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. Chouhan spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to seek help for rescue operations.
“NDRF has already been pressed into service to save those who are stranded. The efforts are on to save everyone. I have assured him of all possible assistance from the Centre,” Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.
Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar reached Sultan Garh Waterfalls to gauge the situation. He is an MP from Gwalior.
