Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections: Shivraj Singh Chouhan banks on welfare schemes to win a fourth term for BJP

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, attempting to win a fourth term for the BJP in the State, is hoping that his government’s “cradle to the grave” welfare give outs will outweigh any resentment, by either the upper castes or Dalit communities.

Speaking exclusively to The Hindu during his “Jan Ashirwad Yatra” across the State, even as the upper caste groups are criticising his government for supporting reservation in promotions in government jobs, Mr. Chouhan said his government “did what it did, to ensure ‘samajik samarasta’ or social harmony.”

Mr. Chouhan’s government had become party to an appeal in the Supreme Court against a Madhya Pradesh High Court order striking down reservation in promotions.

Upper caste groups, traditional supporters of the BJP have, under an umbrella organisation named SAPAK, called for a Bharat Bandh and have decided to field candidates in all 230 Assembly constituencies of the State.

Officials in the State government, now without promotions for the last three years as the matter was being heard, are also restive.

“You are here with me on the yatra, you have seen the response that we are getting, Issues such as these can arise, and are to be dealt with. I believe in sabka saath, sabka vikas (support and development for all). For example, beneficiaries under the Sambhal Yojana belong to all strata of society, they are for everyone. In our party, when such issues arise, we discuss and find a way out,” he said.
