New Delhi: A 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for people from general category who also belong to the economically weaker sections, became possible on Wednesday after a bill for this was passed by the Rajya Sabha. The demand by some opposition parties that the bill be sent to a select committee for scrutiny, was turned down. The bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday evening, will now have to be signed off by the President.
Most parties have alleged that the government’s move is a political, meant to reap benefits in the coming national elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pointed out that elections are held in the country every few months.
The Rajya Sabha passed the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019, with 165 ‘ayes’. Only 7 lawmakers voted against it. The bill was presented in the Rajya Sabha by Union minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.
“Delighted the Rajya Sabha has passed The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019. Glad to see such widespread support for the Bill. The House also witnessed a vibrant debate, where several members expressed their insightful opinions,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. In the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the bill had the support of 323 lawmakers, only three lawmakers were against it.
Earlier, Rajya Sabha was temporarily adjourned on Wednesday morning as the Congress and several other parties protested, demanding that the bill be sent to a select committee for scrutiny. Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Left Front and Tamil Nadu’s opposition DMK supported the demand.
