Bowling coach Bharat Arun explains why it is unfair to compare Rishabh Pant with MS Dhoni

Defending 359 at Mohali, India failed to counter the brilliance from Australian trio of Usman Khawaja (91), Peter Handscomb (117) and Ashton Turner (84 not out) as the Aussies romped past the opposition by 4 wickets. While India missed former skipper MS Dhoni’s guidance in the middle, there were calls for his inclusion back into the squad (he has been rested for the last two ODIs) after youngster Rishabh Pant made quite a few mistakes behind the stumps to cost India the match.

A large section of the crowd chanted Dhoni’s name in unison after seeing Pant’s follies at IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Sunday. After the match, Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan voiced his opinion on the Dhoni-Pant debate and stated that the latter needs time to settle down. Ahead of the fifth and final ODI at Feroz Shah Kotla, bowling coach Bharat Arun also backed Dhawan’s claims and stated that it is “unfair to compare” both the wicketkeepers.

Addressing the reporters in the pre-match conference, Arun stated, “Unfair to compare Dhoni and Pant. Dhoni’s stature is huge. He is a legend. His work behind the stumps is exemplary. MSD is a huge influence on the team.”

Pant tried to be cheeky, like his senior pro, behind the stumps but gave a few chances to the eventual Man of the Match, Turner, at Mohali. His erratic glovework didn’t impress skipper Virat Kohli, who was miffed with him during the intense chase. Replacing Dhoni – whose technique is unorthodox but has inflicted 538 dismissals in ODIs – isn’t easy and the Delhi youngster felt the heat in the middle during the penultimate encounter. In addition to the stumpings and catches, Dhoni contributes with his no-look run-outs out of nowhere. His protege tried to do the same but failed which erred the fans.

Speaking about the combinations ahead of the series decider, Arun added, “We will be trying out different combinations. Not necessarily these combinations will be in the World Cup.”

Considering the workload and the back-to-back matches, Team India opted for no training in the run-up to the final ODI.

India and Australia will square off at the iconic Feroz Shah Kotla for the fifth time. So far, both sides have locked horns in 4 encounters with India leading in the head-to-head record (3-1). Kohli and Co haven’t lost a bilateral series at home since October 2015 and will be eager to keep their record intact and negate the threat from the Australians.
