Redmi Go launched in India: Xiaomi’s first Android Go phone priced at Rs 4,499
Xiaomi’s has finally announced its latest smartphone, Android Go, for the Indian market. The device was launched at an event in Delhi alongside the announcement of a new payments service — Mi Pay — which can be used to send and receive money and also make bill payments and DTH, as well as phone recharges. Mi Pay is being pegged as a “one-stop solution for all payments” and will be rolled out to all Xiaomi users in the coming days.
Coming back to the Redmi Go, the launch of the Android Go device comes on the heels of the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro smartphones in India. The phones were received quite well by the audiences with the two going out of stock within seconds after going on sale for the first time earlier this month.
However, the company doesn’t appear to be in a mood to rest on this achievement and is now looking to take over the ultra-affordable segment with its new Android Go warrior. Xiaomi has announced the Redmi Go at a price of Rs 4,499 making it the most affordable smartphone in the Redmi lineup. The phone will go on sale at 12 PM on March 22, 2019.
The price of the device can be brought down some more through discounts and offers that Xiaomi has announced with the Redmi Go. For example, users can use Jio’s services with the phone and avail a cashback of Rs 2,200 and a get up to 100GB data free.
Redmi Go Specifications
The Redmi Go is Xiaomi’s first Android Go device and as such is an entry-level phone that brings with it basic level specs. The device runs Google’s lightweight version of Android Oreo and is powered by Qualcomm’s modest budget offering — Quad Core 1.4Ghz clocked Snapdragon 425 SoC — which has been paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage.
The Redmi Go also brings with it an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera available to use on the device. Xiaomi claims the camera will be supplemented with a number of software tricks that will help the device emerge as the best cameraphone in the segment. The phone also brings with it a 1080p video recording capability which is a first for the segment. For the front camera, Xiaomi has included the beutify feature as well as HD video calling from the lens.
On the outside, the phone comes with a 5-inch HD panel with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The body is metallic and features a dual microphone and bottom-facing speaker. Powering the Android Go warrior is a 3000 mAh battery which Xiaomi claims can give up to 10 days of standby time and hours and hours of music and video playback.
The phone also supports 20 Dual Sim + MicroSD card which can further increase the storage on the phone. There’s also first in class dual mic reduction for high-quality voice calling. Xiaomi is also shipping with the phone a special charger with surge protection up to extremely high voltages. The phone’s body is created using brushed metal and is available in two colours — Black and blue colour options.
However, the most interesting thing about the Redmi Go is the fact that it brings with it Android Go — based on the Android Oreo platform. This helps it bring kernel optimised apps like Gmail Go, Assistant Go, Maps Go, YouTube Go and others that can run smoothly on the phone.
Another interesting thing about the Redmi Go is that with Google’s Android Go it will support 20 plus applications and Google Assistant in three languages — Hindi, English and even Hinglish. The partnership with Google also helps the Redmi Go to get unlimited photo storage on the cloud.
Redmi Go Price and availability
The Xiaomi Redmi Go has come to India a little late after its global launch. In previous weeks, the Redmi Go had been announced in various markets, including Europe, Africa, and some other countries like the Philippines. In all these markets the price ranged around the Rs 5000 mark.
However, in India, the smartphone has been launched at a price of Rs 4,499. The Android Go device will go up on sale starting 12 PM on March 22, 2019. It will be available in two colours at the time of launch — black and blue.
Xiaomi’s push for India
Another interesting thing to note from the launch event is how Xiaomi explained the extent of its growing footprint in India. The company now has over 1000+ service centers in India.
Xiaomi also revealed that it employs 20,000 Indians — of which a great chunk is women. It also revealed that it is expanding its manufacturing plants to 7 in India. The company now has manufacturing plants in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
The company claims that of the smartphones it sells in the country, 95 per cent are currently manufactured in India, but with the launch of new manufacturing units, this number will now go up to 99 per cent.
