BJP’s new-face policy for Chhattisgarh surprises many

The BJP’s choice of candidates for Lok Sabha polls in Chhattisgarh has surprised many and left quite a few brood faces in the party.

The BJP this time decided not to re-nominate any of its sitting MPs in Chhattisgarh, where the party suffered a humiliating defeat in the hands of Congress in 2018 assembly elections.

The sitting MPs were surprisingly replaced by lesser-known candidates.

The saffron party’s state leadership, however, defended its strategy, saying similar experiment was mulled even before the last assembly elections.

“Even before the assembly elections, the party had thought of brining in new faces.

But it could not happen at that time and it might have contributed to our defeat,” said senior BJP leader of the state Sachidanand Upasane.

He described the decision to back the new faces as a “well thought-out experiment.”

“The opposition will not be able to put any allegations against our candidate as they are fresh and new,” he said.

Upasane also ruled out the possibility of state assembly elections affecting the results of Lok Sabha polls.

According to him, in 2013, BJP had lost state assembly seats in Bastar and Surguja regions. However, in the Lok Sabha polls BJP won both Surguja and Bastar.

But not everyone in the party is quite happy with the experiment.

A senior BJP leader and former MLA questioned why such experiment was done only in Chhattisgarh?

Preferring anonymity, he said performance of all sitting MPs was not bad.

“New faces are not that popular in their regions hence the party cadres may not support them whole-heartedly,” he said.

“It looks like that party top leadership has lost faith in the Chhattisgarh sitting MPs”, he said.

The Congress on the other hand appeared happy with the BJP’s choice of low-key candidates.

Not buying the BJP’s fresh-face theory, Bhujit Joshi, a member of the Congress research committee, said practically it was unlikely that that people would forget the misdeeds of the BJP government within a few months of voting it out.

“If the BJP had pitted senior leader like Brijmohan Agrawal, as was speculated before tickets were announced, then it would have been tough for us to win the Raipur seat,” a Congress leader opined seeking anonymity.
