Congress asks EC to disqualify Amit Shah from contesting Lok Sabha elections for filing ‘false affidavit’
New Delhi: Accusing the BJP president Amit Shah of filing a false affidavit of his income declaration, the Congress party on Friday asked the Election Commission to disqualify him from contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Gandhinagar.
Demanding action against Shah for allegedly not disclosing his liabilities, the Congress party in its complaint alleged that the BJP chief filed a false affidavit with “two glaring omissions”- first, regarding a plot in Gandhinagar and second, regarding loans taken from a commercial bank by his son for which he is the guarantor.
The Congress, citing reports, alleged that Shah, in its affidavit, has declared the value of the property as Rs 25 lakh whereas it is valued at nearly Rs 66.5 lakh as per the government guidelines.
The party further claimed that Shah, before filing his nomination for Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat, had mortgaged two of his properties to Kalupur Commercial Cooperative Bank, one of Gujarat’s largest cooperative banks for his son Jay Shah’s business venture in 2016.
“The properties were mortgaged in lieu of a large and substantial loan of Rs 25 crore extended by the bank to his son’s company. It is, therefore, a fact that the properties are mortgaged to Kalupur Commercial Cooperative Bank and hence constitute a liability that should have been declared,” the party said in its complaint, reported news agency IANS.
Alleging that the omission of liabilities was “deliberate and not inadvertent”, the party urged the EC to take immediate note of this and initiate appropriate proceedings to disqualify Shah from Lok Sabha polls.
“The Election Commission of India must take immediate note of this and initiate appropriate proceedings to disqualify Amit Shah from contesting the upcoming elections. Further, the ECI must initiate proceedings against Amit Shah for the filing of a false affidavit,” the complaint said.
