Big blow to Kings XI Punjab, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy picks up finger injury
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have been dealt with a big blow as mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has picked up a finger injury ahead of their match against Rajasthan Royals. It is still not known how long Chakravarthy will be out but it looks like his season could be over due to the unfortunate injury. Varun made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 27.
He finished with figures of 1/35 in his debut match at the Eden Gardens. He was taken to the cleaners by Sunil Narine on his debut after getting hit for three sixes and a four in an over. And he hasn’t played in the IPL since that game. He fractured his finger ahead of KXIP’s clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) earlier this month and hasn’t recovered since.
“Kings XI Punjab’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has picked up an injury during the visit to Chennai earlier in the month,” a statement on KXIP’s official website said.
“After making his VIVO Indian Premier League debut against Kolkata Knight Riders late last month, the 27-year-old has been absent from the line-up for the ensuing matches.
“The team is hopeful that Chakravarthy, who was expected to feature regularly on pitches that assisted spinners, will recover speedily and add to the Shers’ arsenal.”
Varun was the joint-costliest player in the IPL 2019 auctions where he was bought for Rs 8.4 cr by KXIP. He had impressed in the Tamil Nadu Premier League where he helped Siechem Madurai Panthers to their first title. His economy of 4.7 is what impressed KXIP to splash the cash on him.
Now the team would be hopeful that the 27-year-old spinner can make a quick return as KXIP push for a playoff place this season. They play Rajasthan Royals on Monday at the PCA Stadium.
