Amethi: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, responding to the government’s notice to Rahul Gandhi asking him to respond to a foreign citizenship allegation, said on Tuesday, “the entire country knows he was born and brought up here”.
Rahul Gandhi has been asked by the home ministry to respond within 15 days to a complaint by BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has alleged that the Congress president declared himself a British citizen in the documents of a company he was associated with.
“The entire country knows that Rahul Gandhi is Hindustani. Everybody knows he was born, raised here. Everyone knows. What rubbish,” Priyanka Gandhi told reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi, where she is campaigning for her brother.
The home ministry notice comes midway through the national election, after the fourth round of voting. Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Amethi as well as Wayanad in Kerala.
The notice from BC Joshi, the home ministry director in charge of citizenship, is based on Subramanian Swamy’s documents on Backops, a company with which Rahul Gandhi was associated. According to Swamy’s complaint, Backops was registered in the UK in 2003 with Rahul Gandhi as one of the directors and the secretary. The complaint alleges that in the company’s annual returns filed in 2005 and 2006, Rahul Gandhi had declared his nationality as British. The dissolution application of the company dated February 17, 2009 also refers to Rahul Gandhi’s nationality as British, the letter says.
“You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of the communication,” the home ministry writes.
Subramanian Swamy, a fierce critic of the Gandhis, raised the allegation first in 2015, in a complaint to the ethics committee of parliament, and has repeated it several times since.
Rahul Gandhi, in his reply to the parliamentary panel, had a called it an “endeavor to malign my name”.
His party Congress called it a sign of the BJP’s growing desperation, questioning such a notice when their chief has been contesting polls since 2004.
