How Mumbai Indians sealed playoffs spot by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in Super Over

Three-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) looked the likely winners in the later stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday but found Manish Pandey pulling his side level at the end of 20 overs, to force the match into the Super Over. Jasprit Bumrah then gave another fine example of his death bowling masterclass to seal the deal for MI.

17 runs were required by the Sunrisers to win the match in the 20th over, with Pandey and Mohammed Nabi on the crease. Hardik Pandya did get the wicket of Nabi on the 4th delivery of the final over but went on to concede 16 runs in the over, including a last-ball six that saw SRH tie MI’s score of 162.

Hyderabad were out to bat first as Pandey and Nabi looked to make use of the momentum and put decent runs on the board but they were up against one of the finest death bowlers in the world, if not the finest, Bumrah. Here’s how Bumrah’s over panned out:

Ball 1: Krunal Pandya fumbles while fielding near point area, giving the SRH duo an opportunity to convert the single into a double. Manish was running back at the wicket-keeper’s end and fell short of his ground as the first ball resulted into a run-out.

Ball 2: Martin Guptill, the new man in, got a single as he hit the ball to the long on area to bring Mohammad Nabi on strike.

Ball 3: A short delivery from Bumrah and Nabi dispatches the ball over the deep square leg area for a six. Not the finest of contacts with the ball but the job gets done.

Ball 4: Nabi bowled by Bumrah as he swings again but sees the bowler’s delivery beat him with the speed and hits the leg stump

Rashid Khan was chosen to bowl in the Super Over for the Sunrisers. Hardik and Kieron Pollard were given the responsibility with the bat. Here’s how the Afghan spinner performed in the eliminator:

Ball 1: Just the first delivery and Hardik dispatches the ball cleanly over the long-off boundary, once again giving a fine example of the sort of form he is in.

Ball 2: Hardik guides the ball on the leg side to take a single and give the strike to his partner Pollard.

Ball 3: Pollard pushed the ball towards mid-wicket area to bag an easy double. Mumbai take 8 runs in the Super Over to win the match and confirm their progression into the playoffs.
