Would not have escaped unhurt if CRPF had not protected me: Amit Shah on Kolkata roadshow violence
New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of perpetrating violence during his roadshow in Kolkata yesterday. Shah told a press conference here that had central forces not been present, he too would not have escaped unhurt after his convoy was allegedly attacked.
“Had CRPF not been there, it would have been really difficult for me to escape. BJP workers were also beaten up. TMC can go to any extent, it’s with luck that I made it out,” Shah said.
Shah also said that the bust of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was damaged at the Vidyasagar College by TMC workers to gain sympathy. The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has realised that its “reverse count” has started, he added.
The BJP chief levelled the allegation amid claims that the bust was damaged by workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is affiliated to the BJP.
He pointed out that six phases of Lok Sabha Elections have taken place but violence has not been witnessed in any other state than West Bengal. He also accused the Election Commission of failing to control violence in the state.
“Mamata Banerjee claims that the BJP is doing it. I want to tell her, we are fighting in every state across the country unlike you who is contesting on 42 seats in West Bengal. Violence didn’t take place in six phases of elections anywhere but in Bengal, which proves that the TMC is responsible for it,” Shah told reporters.
“The Election Commission is a mute spectator in West Bengal; history-sheeters have not been arrested before polls,” he said, slamming the poll panel.
Shah alleged the poll panel has laid “double standards” and has been behaving in a partial manner towards the TMC.
