After winning on Didi’s turf, BJP aims at Mamata’s throne; leader says ‘TMC govt could fall in 90 days’
Kolkata: A day after Lok Sabha election results, fast-paced developments are taking place in West Bengal when Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has suffered a setback.
As per the final results available on the Election Commission website, the TMC has won 22 out of the total 40 parliamentary seats in West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had won just two seats in the 2014 elections, has made deep inroads in the eastern state and managed to bag as many as 18 seats.
The Congress finished third with two seats while the Left Front, which ruled the state for more than three decades, has been completely wiped out as far as Lok Sabha elections are concerned.
CM Mamata has called an urgent meeting of the party MPs – who won and lost – at 3:30 pm on Saturday at her residence.
The BJP, meanwhile, now appears to be gunning for power in the state. BJP leader Arjun singh has said that the TMC government could fall within 90 days.
He said as many as 40 TMC MLAs are in touch with the BJP, adding there could be a bonus even before PM Modi takes oath.
It may be recalled that PM Modi, during campaigning in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha elections, had also said that 40 TMC MLAs were in touch with the BJP.
During seven-phased voting for the Lok Sabha elections, massive violence was witnessed, especially between BJP and TMC workers.
In fact, the Election Commission had curtailed the campaigning period by one day before the final phase on May 19.
