Donald Trump ‘angry’ at Jamal Khashoggi’s murder but says ‘nobody pointed a finger’ at Mohammed bin Salman
Osaka: United States President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he is extremely angry about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi but stressed that no blames Saudian crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman. He also lauded Salman for opening up Saudi Arabia to the world and bringing in a positive revolution in the country, especially in regards to women.
During a press conference on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, Donald Trump was asked whether he raised the issue of Khashoggi’s murder with Mohammed Bin Salman during a meeting with him. He replied that is “extremely angry” and unhappy about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, however, “nobody has directly pointed a finger” at the Saudi’s crown prince.
Trump went on to add, “It’s an honor to be with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, a friend of mine, a man who has really done things in the last five years in terms of opening up Saudi Arabia. And I think especially what you’ve done for women. I’m seeing what’s happening; it’s like a revolution in a very positive way.”
“I want to just thank you on behalf of a lot of people, and I want to congratulate you. You’ve done, really, a spectacular job,” asserted the US President.
Earlier in the day, British Prime Minister Theresa May raised concerns about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and called for openness and transparency in the investigation with Mohammed Bin Salman during bilateral talks with him at the G20 Summit.
Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018. The UN recently said that Khashoggi had been the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution, an extrajudicial killing for which the state of Saudi Arabia is responsible. On the other hand, Saudi maintains that the attack on Khashoggi was a rogue operation and that the administration has apprehended several people in the matter.
