Slowdown, yes, but no recession: Thawarchand Gehlot

RAIPUR: Union minister Thawarchand Gehlot on Monday said there is no economic recession in the country, and “things are going smooth”.

“It is being projected as a frightening economic situation, but in reality, there’s no recession in the country,” he said at a press conference in Raipur at an event to mark 100 days of the Narendra Modi government.

Gehlot recounted “achievements” in finance and banking, and said that India’s economy was “way better” than the rumours of recession hitting the nation. He admitted that there is a “slowdown” in a few sectors, including automobiles. “But there is no economic slowdown, as such. The Centre has taken initiatives on the financial front and introduced merger of banks and reduction in interest rates,” he said. He ranked scrapping of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu & Kashmir, the triple talaq law and NRC among the biggest achievements of the Modi government in the first 100 days. “People whose citizenship remains unproven in Assam might have to go back to where they really belong, or the place they have come from. Those who successfully prove their citizenship will continue staying in the country,” the Union minister said.

Jal Shakti Abhiyan and amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act also have far-reaching significance, he said. Steep fines in the amended MV Act will help reduce the number of road accidents, he said.
