Finishing Lesson for Rishabh Pant? MS Dhoni shares his approach to bat at No. 6
It’s been a while since MS Dhoni walked out to finish the innings for India. His mesmerising sixes, hard running between the wickets, calm demeanour in nervy situations are some of the traits that the Indian cricket team is surely missing. With Rishabh Pant being entrusted with the responsibility of filling the big void left by Dhoni in limited-overs cricket, the young stumper hasn’t quite been able to get a grip on the opportunity and cement his place in the team. With finishing the innings certainly looking like an issue for Pant, Dhoni revealed what approach he used to take as he found himself with the task of batting at the No. 6 spot.
Often players are seen in a rush to score runs. The last few overs of an innings – be it while batting first or second – see some looking to score runs quickly despite having just arrived on the crease. In the process, they sometimes end up giving away their wicket. Dhoni delved on the situation and suggested scoring 25 odd runs in about 15 balls that a No. 6 batsman plays isn’t bad by any means.
“It is very important to have a practical approach. If I’m batting at number 6 and play 15 balls, I know if I score 25-30 runs, it is very good, outstanding performance. But at the same time, there can be hindrances.
“You think about scoring for your team and go for big hits, it may also cost you a wicket. So you will have to practically set up what your target is,”
The 38-year-old who is widely recognised to have one of the finest cricketing brains across the world, further asserted on the need to focus on the things that can be controlled at the moment and not worry about those that can’t be.
“As I already said, it is important to focus on controllable things. You have to work on it, and the process is very important to succeed,” he added.
With there still being a big question mark on the future of Dhoni, only time will tell what the fate holds for the 2011 World Cup winner.
