Apple India stores hire highly qualified workers, some paid over 1 lakh per month
Apple finally opened its first Indian retail stores in Delhi and Mumbai last week. Both stores employ roughly 170 employees who can collectively speak over 15 languages. A new report by The Economic Times states that the company has hired high-qualified workers with backgrounds in MBA, B-Tech in electrical engineering, computer science, bachelor’s in computer application, and so on. Citing industry experts, the report notes that the company is paying Rs 1 lakh per month to some retail store representatives, which is 3-4 times the compensation executives receive at other electronic stores in the country.
India Today Tech also cross-checked the qualifications of some Apple India store workers on LinkedIn. We found that an Apple Genius – Apple’s technical support staff at the retail store, has a background in MBA and data analysis. The worker has roughly seven years of work experience. Another Apple Genius who previously worked at Apple and EXL holds a degree in BTech (packaging science). The publication spotted Apple India store employees who studied at international universities such as Cambridge or Griffith University.
After visiting the store in Delhi over the weekend it was noticed some expats managing the show, who have likely worked at Apple stores outside India.
Meanwhile, Apple’s career page highlights that there are still some openings at its stores in India. For the Apple Genius position, the company is looking for a candidate who will provide “insightful advice and friendly, hands-on technical support to Apple customers in need.” Some additional requirements include “aptitude for acquiring skills in technical repairs and an eagerness to learn about all Apple products and devices”, “excellent verbal and written communications skills”, and “flexibility with your schedule. Your work hours will be based on business needs.”
The career page notes that some Apple benefits include health-wellness resources and time-away programmes. Workers at all levels can buy stock grants for employees at a discount.
During the store launches, Apple said that their India-specific retail outlets would help the company connect closely to customers. Both stores were inaugurated by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who also met with PM Narendra Modi to discuss the company’s growth in India to create more job opportunities. After meeting PM Modi, Cook said, “We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future — from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country.”
Recently, Apple analyst Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter stated that Apple’s stores in India symbolise the company’s belief in the country as both a sales engine and a manufacturing hub. He adds that the stores won’t add much revenue by themselves.
