FT lists Raghuram Rajan as a candidate for top post at Bank of England

London-based Financial Times has listed Raghuram Rajan, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, as one of the candidates who could be considered for the top job at the Bank of England. “Attracting Raghuram Rajan, the highly respected Chicago-based economist and former Reserve Bank of India governor, would be a coup, as would securing Agustín Carstens, Mexico’s central bank chief and the new general manager of the Bank of International Settlements,” says the article.

Philip Hammond, UK chancellor, is starting the process to select the next governor of the Bank of England to replace Mark Carney next year. According to the article, the chancellor said he had already begun looking for candidates in forums such as the International Monetary Fund spring meetings in Washington.

Hammond’s comments show the government has not ruled out another non-British appointment—Carney is a Canadian—and is seeking a figure who can make an impact on the global stage as the UK prepares for Brexit, the article says.

Professor of Finance at University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Rajan was the first non-western and the youngest at 40 to become the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. He shot to big fame three years after he presented a counter-intuitive paper at a prestigious annual gathering of economists and bankers in the US in 2005. He predicted a financial crisis, was made fun of but was proved right three years later when the financial crisis hit the US. Last year, the The Wall Street Journal had reported that Rajan was one of the six economists to make their way to a list of dozens of possible Nobel Prize winners based on research citations.

Financial Times lists another Indian who could be a candidate, Shriti Vadera. “If Mr Hammond follows his predecessor’s instincts and wants a lively hard-hitter at the BoE, Shriti Vadera, the chair of Santander UK and a former business minister under Gordon Brown fits the bill. The Treasury does not consider Baroness Vadera, who sits on the cross benches in the House of Lords, to have been deeply committed to the Labour party when she was a minister. Having been a key government figure in the financial crisis, Baroness Vadera is also credited with doing a good job in chairing a committee of City grandees, and later in helping to frame the UK’s position on Brexit and financial services,” says the article.
