Rupee hits record low of 69.13 against US dollar

NEW DELHI: The rupee hit a record low of 69.13 per dollar in early trade on Friday, tracking weakness in the yuan with traders monitoring the domestic stock market for further direction.
Traders are also cautious of the central bank stepping in to prevent a sharp fall in the currency.
The yuan dropped further by 0.28 per cent to 6.7943 per dollar, its lowest levels in a year following a rising slump in recent weeks as the trade war between US and China brewed.
The rupee on Thursday took a hard 43-paise knock — from 68.62 on Wednesday — to close below the 69 level for the first time at a historic low of 69.05 against the US currency. The US dollar surged to a fresh one-year high after the Fed chief ’s testimony to the US Senate on Wednesday bolstered expectations of interest rate hikes. This is the biggest single-day fall since May 29.

The domestic currency suffered a major setback as forex sentiment turned wobbled once again with a resurgent dollar and a slew of local issues sparking jitters among investors. The two-year treasury yield was near the multi-year high mark of 2.6 per cent., hitting appeal of emerging market currencies.
Also, the Parliament will on Friday debate a no-confidence motion tabled by opposition parties against PM Narendra Modi’s government, which weighed on forex market sentiment.
