If you know what’s happening, you should voice opinion, otherwise you sound like an idiot: John Abraham
Days after actor Kangana Ranaut called out Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh averring that Bollywood celebrities should speak about politics and other issues of national importance, actor John Abraham, too, has shared his opinion on the same.
In an exclusive interaction with ZoomTV.com ahead of his upcoming release RAW, Abraham shared one should always voice their opinion, provided they are politically aware. And if not, one shouldn’t say something just for the sake of it.
Asked if celebrities should engage in political discussions and voice their opinions, Abraham said, “I think if you are politically aware, you should always say it. If you know what’s happening, you should voice… otherwise you sound like an idiot.”
Stressing that one should do so with precaution, Abraham stated, “Be careful with what you say… how you say it, measure it. And if you don’t know, then there’s no harm in not saying anything and just saying I don’t know. I am sure people would respect that.”
The debate started when Kangana called Alia, Ranbir and Ranveer “irresponsible” for not voicing their views on Indian politics. At the success bash of her last release, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Kangana had said, “I was watching Ranveer and Alia’s interview where they said, ‘Why should we speak about politics. We haven’t done anything. It doesn’t work like that. You have to be responsible. Ranbir was telling somebody, ‘Mere ghar mei toh bijli, paani aata hai. Why should I… politics?’ You have this house because of this country. It’s the money of the citizens with which you buy a Mercedes. How can you talk like that? This is irresponsible.”
Asked if opinions flying on social media dictate his work choices, Abraham explained, “It depends… a) if you are a social media star, b) if you are governed by social media or c) you are a man of your own worth and want to make films that you really want to make and do films you really want to do.”
He added that the mood of social media doesn’t impact him and neither does he make statements to trend. “People like us, even Jackie (Shroff), we are not really concerned about the mood of social media or let’s make this statement to trend. We don’t belong to that space.”
Meanwhile, Abraham’s next titled RAW is slated to release this Friday. Set in the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the spy thriller is inspired by true events. Co-starring Sikandar Kher, Mouni Roy and Jackie Shroff in lead roles, the film has been directed by Robbie Grewal. Besides this, Abraham will also star in Batla House, Paglapanti and Officer Khan among others.
Abraham further said the primary reason he chose RAW was because he “loved it the minute I heard it” adding, “I was like, I’ll be an idiot not to do this. When I saw Sikander and Jackie’s characters, you feel each one is so empowered in their roles, you can only point to the director and say he’s really given you the power to do what you really want to do, he had a fantastic script.”
