Salman Khan sentenced to 5 years in jail, other actors acquitted in blackbuck poaching case

Jodhpur: A Jodhpur court has sentenced Bollywood superstar Salman Khan to five-year jail term in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, while other actors — Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam Kothari — have been acquitted. Salman will have to spend the night in Jodhpur Jail as his bail hearing in Sessions Court has been posted for Friday.
The Bishnoi Sabha, a community committed to protect the blackbucks, has decided to appeal against other acquittals. Salman Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks in Bhagoda ki Dhani in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the intervening night of October 1-2, 1998, during the shooting of Hum Saath Saath Hain. He has been convicted under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, which carries maximum punishment of six years and minimum one-year jail term.
Salman Khan will be in the same jail as rape convict Asaram Bapu. His sisters Alvira and Arpita reportedly broke down in court after the verdict was read out. The Bollywood actor has been taken to the Jodhpur Central Jail. In 2006, he had spent five nights in the jail. Salman Khan will be in the same jail as rape convict Asaram Bapu.
In October 1998, Salman Khan along with others was believed to be in the Gypsy that was being driven by the former himself during the alleged hunt near Jodhpur. The antelopes were shot dead near a village of Bishnois, a community that revers the animals and is passionate about protecting them. Salman Khan spotted a herd of blackbuck and shot dead two of them, said the prosecution in court. The court heard 28 witnesses including Bishnoi villagers who came out running from their huts on hearing gunshots.
The Bishnois alleged that they took a bike and chased the Gypsy, but the actor got away. Deer carcass was found at the spot after the actors left.
Salman Khan is one of the most bankable stars in India with a cult fan following. Currently, around Rs. 700 crore is believed to be riding on him in the bustling Hindi film industry. He just completed a mega budget film, Race 3. Salman Khan’s conviction has resulted in a big loss for the firm that has licensing arrangement with Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation to design, manufacture, retail and distribute clothing lines under “Being Human” trademark.
In 2015, Salman Khan was cleared in a 2002 hit-and-run case in which his Toyota Land Cruiser had crashed into men sleeping on a pavement in Mumbai’s Bandra, killing a homeless man.
