Seoul: PV Sindhu claimed her first Korea Super Series with a three-setter thrilling victory over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the women’s singles final on Sunday.
Sindhu took an hour and 23 minutes to get over the line as she won 22-20, 11-21, 21-18 and avenged her World Championship loss.
Just a few weeks ago, Okuhara had outlasted the Indian 21-19, 20-22, 22-20 in an hour and 50 minutes at the World Championship in Glasgow in the second-longest women’s singles match
in history.
The Korea Open final was a re-run of that epic battle with the only difference being the name of the champion.
Both players deployed the same strategy against each other as Sindhu looked to keep up her aggressive approach at all times while Okuhara tried to negotiate the Indian in longer rallies.
Sindhu dominated the proceedings from the outset of the match and opened up an early lead but Okuhara fought back soon and ultimately took a 20-18 lead. However, Sindhu gained some
momentum and won four straight points to win the first game 22-20.
Okuhara rallied back in the second game where she managed to trap Sindhu in strenuous rallies. She dominated the Indian throughout and took the second game 21-11.
The final game started neck-and-neck and remained so throughout with both players adopting a cautious approach. While Okuhara bought her A-defence to counter Sindhu’s attack, Sindhu
negotiated Okuhara’s all-court play well.
Okuhara attempted to tire Sindhu again with the longest rally of the match lasting 56 shots. But Sindhu managed to use her height to good effect and finally eked out a close victory.
With the win, Sindhu drew level 4-4 with Okuhara in their head-to-head record after the Japanese had taken the lead post the World Championships.
This was Sindhu’s third Super Series title after she won the China Open in 2015 and the India Open earlier this year. Since the silver medal display at Rio Olympics, the Korea Super Series
was Sindhu’s fourth title.
