London: The International Cricket Council (ICC) will hold a meeting in the aftermath of the bomb blast in Manchester to look into the safety and security of all the participating teams in the Champions Trophy which begins next week.
London, Birmingham and Cardiff are the three venues which will host Champions Trophy matches in England from June 1-18.
At least 22 people were killed and 59 wounded in an explosion at the end of a concert by US singer Ariana Grande in the English city of Manchester on Monday, in what two US officials said was a suspected suicide bombing.
Prime Minister Theresa May said the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack. If confirmed, it would be the deadliest militant assault in Britain since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London’s transport system in July 2005.
“The ICC will hold a meeting later in the day to address the issue in the wake of the terror attack in Manchester,” a top ICC official told Indian media house.
“The ICC is concerned with what has happened in Manchester and will have a conference call later in the day with stakeholders joining from various places. How and what happens will be conveyed to all the participating teams,” the official said.
The Champions Trophy was last held in 2013, also in England. India are the defending champions and will open their campaign this year against Pakistan on June 4 at Edgbaston before taking on Sri Lanka on June 8 and South Africa on June 11 at the Kennington Oval in London.
