Napier: Virat Kohli went past West Indies great Brian Lara and is now in the top 10 of the leading ODI run-scorers. Kohli, on Tuesday, was named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year and Cricketer of the Year. He became the first man to sweep all three big ICC awards.
Kohli has been in outstanding ODI form since the 2015 World Cup. He now has 39 ODI hundreds, second only to Sachin Tendulkar who finished with 49 hundreds in the format after playing for a quarter of a century. Kohli, who debuted in August 2008, is already considered to be the greatest ODI player by the likes of Michael Clarke.
Over the last two years, Virat Kohli has scored 12 ODI hundreds. He was the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2017 as well as 2018. Virat Kohli is widely believed to break most of Sachin Tendulkar’s records in the one-day format and if keep this up, he might do it sooner rather than later.
Brian Lara, West Indies’ greatest batsman since Viv Richards, played 299 ODIs and scored 10405 runs including 19 hundreds at an average of 40.48.
Kohli went past Lara’s tally of ODI runs in only his 220th ODI. He boast of an average of nearly 60 which is the highest in the 10K club.
Virat Kohli is now also within touching distance of Rahul Dravid, who scored 10889 runs from 344 ODIs.
Kohli already has several batting records to his name but entering the top 10 so early in his career would be special. He went past Brian Lara when with a boundary off Mitchell Santner in the 16th over.
