111 people have died of coronavirus in India, with 28 dying and 704 fresh cases in the last 24 hours alone, among the highest so far. The latest figures from the Union Health Ministry take the takes the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country past the 4,000-mark, to 4,281 cases.
This is for the fourth consecutive day that India has registered an increase of 500-plus cases. Over 1,000 of India’s total cases, or nearly 30 per cent of the total cases, are connected to the event organised by the Islamic sect Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area last month.
The union cabinet, meanwhile, decided that salaries of central ministers and Members of parliament will be slashed by 30 per cent for the coming year beacause of the coronavirus crisis.
The “maturity and seriousness” shown by the public during the lockdown to stem the spread of coronavirus is unprecedented, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, addressing BJP workers on the party’s 40th foundation day. “It is going to be a long haul, we do not have to tire, our resolve and mission are to emerge victorious in fight against this pandemic,” he told BJP workers.

Sources said the calls were part of an outreach on the lifting of the 21-day nationwide lockdown. The lockdown has been criticised by the opposition who had not been consulted on the matter.
The Health Ministry on Sunday said that the coronavirus cases in India are doubling every 4.1 days and that the rate could have been slower (at 7.1 days) if the Delhi mosque event – which was attended by thousands from India and abroad – hadn’t taken place.
Worldwide, 1.2 million people have been infected and nearly 66,000 killed.US President Donald Trump spoke to PM Modi on Saturday, asking for India to allow export of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine tablets to treat COVID-19 patients. India had halted sale of this drug, and its variations. As of Sunday, the US reported over three lakh cases and 8,000 deaths.
