Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea are among other inmates, who have been booked for rioting in Byculla jail. A scuffle broke out between inmates and jail officials on Friday that resulted into death of an inmate Manju Shete. She reportedly sustained serious injuries due to which she died.
Media reports claimed that food was one of the issues for which the deceased inmate Shete regularly exchanged words with the jail officials. The inmates were frustrated with many other things and all of them wanted to come out of the prison anyhow.
On the day of the incident i.e on Friday afternoon, Shete was involved in a heated argument with the officials over food. This eventually turned into a fight, and the jail officials too retaliated in which Shete received serious injuries.
She was rushed to JJ hospital, where she was declared brought death. The news spread among the inmates and they decided to retaliate the next afternoon.
Media reports claimed that investigation in the Byculla women prison riot revealed that the inmates were unhappy with the food and basic facilities inside the jail premises. The probe also revealed that the inmates had planned the scuffle in advance.
The police are also probing the role of Indrani Mukerjea, who according to them has allegedly instigated the scuffle, said the reports. However, there is no confirmation to this. But, sources say that she was one of the instigators.
The officials revealed that there have been many incidents in the past where the inmates and jail authorities were involved in heated arguments.
The inmates had created ruckus inside the jail, and even burnt down the jail properties. They even managed to reach the terrace and screamed at people outside, which can be seen in one of the video.
The police are going through various CCTV cameras installed inside the jail which will give them detailed account of the incident.
Cases have been registered against all the jail inmates including Indrani Mukerjea, under Section 353, 332, 333, 436, 504, 506, 120(b) and several other sections of rioting. Another case is registered against the jail officials for murder under section 302 and IPC 34.
