New Delhi: The BJP and Shiv Sena alliance are set to retain power in Maharashtra, though with a reduced majority in comparison to 2014. In Haryana, the BJP intends to form the next government as the single largest party that’s six seats short of majority.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people on Thursday evening, saying the party intends to “work with the same zeal and dedication for the state’s progress”. In Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena, buoyed by a hugely improved performance, is talking of a 50:50 division of cabinet berths and a turn at the Chief Minister’s post.
In the by-polls held across 17 states and the Union Territory of Puducherry, the BJP and its allies won 26 of the 51 assembly seats. The Congress won in 12 constituencies while Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM won its maiden victory in Bihar.
BJP chief and Union Minister Amit Shah, who had summoned Chief Minister Khattar earlier in the day, thanked Haryana for “making the BJP the single-largest party in the state”. “I thank the people of Haryana for blessing us. We will continue to work with the same zeal and dedication for the state’s progress. I laud the efforts of hardworking @BJP4Haryana Karyakartas who toiled extensively and went among the people to elaborate on our development agenda,” PM Modi tweeted..
In Haryana, the Jat leader Dushyant Chautala’s newly formed Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) could emerge as a possible kingmaker as the BJP won 40 seats in the 90-member assembly. The Congress won 31 seats while the JJP won 10 seats. the majority mark is at 46.
The Congress, galvanised by the unexpected trends, has reached out to Dushyant Chautala, who, however, is yet to respond, the party said. “The way these trends are showing, it is clear people voted for change,” Chautala told NDTV in the moring. “The keys to the next government will be in the hands of the JJP,” he said.
Congress’s Deepender Hooda said: “Want to tell Dushyant Chautala to come together with us. Each MLA of their party has been chosen to throw out BJP.” He also alleged that the BJP is trying to pressurise Independents for support and said if this continues, he would complain to the Election Commission.
In Maharashtra, the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena are ahead in around 150 of the state’s 288 assembly seats. But the tally is still is way below the 250 seats they were expecting. The BJP was hoping to cross the majority mark on its own steam, but is leading in around 100 seats — way below its 2014 tally of 122. The Sena is heading for a tally of around 60. The majority mark lies at 145.
As the leads indicated that the party is likely to deliver a standout performance, the Sena indicated that it will insist on the 50:50 formula during government formation. Asked about the Chief Minister’s post, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said it was time to implement the 50:50 formula. “Sena contested less seats on BJP’s request; we can’t be so accommodating always,” he added..
Sources indicated that the Sena can even insist on dividing the 5-year tenure of the government, and occupy the Chief Minister’s office for two-and-a-half years.
The Congress and its ally Nationalist Congress Party are ahead in 97 seats in Maharashtra. But the improved tally can be attributed to Sharad Pawar’s party, which has outperformed the Congress. Pawar, 79, had single-handedly led the NCP charge as the factionalised Congress floundered.
The election in Haryana also saw the rise of the old guard of the Congress under two-time Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The party, which won only 15 seats in 2014 more than doubled its score, ending up with 31 seats despite what was seen as a lacklustre campaign. “We would have won a full majority if we had more time. The trends are in our favour,” Hooda told NDTV.
The BJP’s campaign revolved around national themes as the opposition attempted to highlight multiple local issues – unemployment, farm crisis, farmers’ suicides and the slowdown of the economy. That the opposition’s campaign looked lackluster was seen as the symptom of a changing election narrative where the focus is on national issues even when voters choose a local representative.
