New Delhi: Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir has hit out at fellow party leader Kapil Mishra for his provocative speech at the violence-hit Jaffrabad and said strict action should be taken against all those who make such statements.
“No matter who the person is, whether he is Kapil Mishra or anyone else and belonging to any party, if he has given any provoking speech then strict action should be taken against him,” said Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday. The criticism comes a day after at least 7 people were left dead in the violent clashes that rocked the national capital on Monday.
Gautam Gambhir also said, “Those who giving provocative speeches, action must be taken against them. If policemen are not safe, one can imagine the state of mind of common people.”
Kapil Mishra addressed a gathering in Jaffrabad on Sunday following tension escalated in the area and local groups started pelting stones at each other and burning houses, shops.
Kapil Mishra told the crowd that roads are being blocked by those against the CAA to cut off 35 lakh people in Jaffrabad and neighbouring areas from other parts of Delhi. Kapil Mishra also gave an ultimatum to Delhi Police demanding that police remove the protesters within three days.
Soon after his speech, protests broke out in the area. A day before his speech a group of women had started a sit-in demonstration at Jaffrabad on the lines of Shaheen Bagh.
While tensions escalated on Sunday, Monday was particularly violent as rival groups clashed with each other, a gunman opened fire and arsonists set shops, houses and petrol pumps on fire in Jaffrabad, Maujpur and other areas in Northeast Delhi.
Seven people, including a Delhi Police head constable, have lost their lives in the clashes.
Police fired tear gas shells and also resorted to lathicharge as clashes broke out between pro and anti CAA groups at Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chandbagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura. Security personnel conducted flag marches and prohibitory orders were clamped to bring the situation under control.
At least 11 police personnel, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdara, Amit Sharma and ACP (Gokalpuri) Anuj Kumar were injured while trying to quell the protests. Two CRPF police personnel were also injured, sources said.
50 others have also been injured in the clashes.
Home Minister Amit Shah held a late-night meeting on Monday to review the situation in Delhi.
