India, China Working Hard to Resolve Border Dispute: Singh

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that Indian and China are working very hard for a ‘practical’ and ‘pragmatic’ solution to the boundary dispute between the two countries and that the resolution of the issue will take time, said media reports.

“Well we have the border problem and that problem has to be resolved. We are working very hard to find to have a practical, pragmatic solution to that problem,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

He mad the statement at a press conference in response to a query about relations between India and China.

Singh noted that both countries ‘recognise that it would take time’ and have agreed that with resolution of the border issue pending, New Delhi and Beijing would maintain peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control and by and large that situation prevails on the ground, reports said.

About overall bilateral relations, he said that the economic contents of the relationship have considerably gone up with China today being India’s largest trading partner, said reports.

“On the economic front the relationship is moving in the right direction,” he was quoted as saying, adding that there are large Chinese investments in our country and there are large Indian investments in China.

About multilateral issues, Singh said that there exists a recognition in China that the two countries have similar approach to many issues and can gain by working together, reports said.

In this context, he referred to the Copenhagen conference on climate change last December during which India and China worked closely to block developed nations from imposing their agenda.
